Newport Beach Adopt a Beach Program
Purpose
To establish a means by which interested residents, community groups, and businesses can "adopt" certain areas of beach and clean these areas on a regularly scheduled basis.
Under the direction of the City of
Newport Beach
, the Earth Resource Foundation coordinates the Adopt-A-Beach program by which interested residents, families, church or community groups, and businesses can assist in the cleaning of ocean and bay beaches by "adopting" a stretch of beach.

Why me?
Litter on the beach is a problem arising from human activity. Public participation and “ownership” are critical ingredients in making a real difference in protecting and improving the water quality of our local beaches and the watersheds leading to them.
Litter and debris can also provide a friendly environment where bacteria and viruses from pet wastes and other sources can grow (like fungus ‘critters’ growing under toenails). Research indicates that there is an increased rate of illness (fever, chills, gastroenteritis, rashes, dysentery, hepatitis, ear, nose and throat problems and respiratory illness) among people who surf, swim, or play in or are exposed to bacteria-laden ocean water.
Litter is deposited on the beach in three ways:
- It is carried through our gutters and storm drains (as urban run-off) to your favorite beach. As run-off flows over roads, bridges, parking lots, rooftops and other impervious surfaces to get to the gutters, it picks up anything and everything-- including many or all of the following ingredients: discarded plastic bags, dead balloons, various trash and litter (including fast food containers and cigarette butts), dirt and sediment, household cleaners and soap, chemicals, metal particles, leaves, lawnmower clippings, pet waste, oil, grease and gasoline from car leaks, paints, fertilizers, herbicides, and seepage from faulty or blocked sewer systems. These things end up on your favorite beach and in the water you surf, swim, and play in.
- It is deposited directly ON the Beach by careless beachgoers.
- It comes from ships dumping in the ocean.
Please consider taking some time to adopt and take ownership of your local beaches.
How do I adopt?
To adopt a beach, an interested party should complete and send out the Registration and Waiver Forms found on this website. When we receive your registration and waiver forms, you will receive gloves, buckets, pickers, and data cards. Your or your party will also receive a complimentary plaque that you may display in front of your adopted beach.
Please make an effort to clean your adopted beach at least on a monthly basis. Each time you clean, please complete a data form. Fax your form to 949-645-5173, email to
info@earthresource.org
or mail to:
