Cigarette Litter Beach Cleanup Results

Butts: 1 full bag (large kitchen trash bag) of only cigarette butts
On average 2,000 butts per normal plastic shopping bag, therefore, we are estimating that we collected approximately 10,000 Butts.
Our hard work of the day produced all this trash the day after they cleaned the beach!
We presented our findings, including all the butts, to the Newport Beach City Council on Tuesday, November 25, 2003.
We would appreciate any support from individuals by voicing their opinions or write a letter to have a smoke free beach and pier in the city of Newport Beach.
It just goes to show you that many people are interested in keeping our beaches clean from cigarette litter.
The beach was cleaned/raked the day before.
Although the beach had been cleaned the day before, we still picked up approximately 10,000 cigarette butts on the beach. Yes, it is obvious from this one event that cigarette litter is a problem and a major concern.
Despite the rain, the youth showed up to voice their concern and get their hands dirty. Not only was the day a lot of fun,but informative as individuals were able to see first hand the tenaciousnature of cigarette litter.
A very special thank you to ALL the volunteers and especially Ananya, Zoe, Suzanne, Diana, Ted and Narsis for getting there early, hanging out in the rain and giving so generously of their time!!
